Chemistry Blog Recommendations
A week or so ago, I asked for recommendations for chemistry blogs people thought worth reading from CHMINF-L. I was surprised by how few I received. Perhaps the holidays and end-of-term pressures kept people from replying. However, here is the summary:
From one person I received:
http://cultureofchemistry.blogspot.com/ - "Chemistry is not a world unto itself. It is woven firmly into the fabric of the rest of the world, and various fields, from literature to archeology, thread their way through the chemist's text."
http://www.pontotriplo.org/quickpicks/ - From my Aggregator: mainly Chemistry but also other branches of Science, Education and Technology
From a second this:
http://significant-figures.blogspot.com
http://www.sciencebase.com/SciObs.html
http://www.sciscoop.com
http://usefulchem.blogspot.com
That is all. Can I assume chemistry is not as prolific in the blogosphere as librarianship? If anyone knows of other recommended chemistry (organic and polymer in particular), send them along.

CBC - Canada Votes 2006 - Quizzes, Games and Cartoons
CBC - Canada Votes 2006 - Quizzes, Games and Cartoons: "CBC.ca has partnered with 80Soft to bring you a free, limited edition version of Prime Minister Forever - Canada 2006. It's a sophisticated strategy game that simulates all aspects of a federal election. Rebuilt from the 2004 edition, the goal is simple for major parties like the Liberals and Conservatives: win enough seats to form the next government. The latest release for 2006 also allows candidates from smaller parties, such as the Bloc Qu?b?cois and the Green party, to achieve specific goals without winning the election. As a player, you are responsible for all aspects of your candidate's election strategy, including advertising, fundraising, speeches, spinning the news and recruiting supporters. Players select their party of choice. Each candidate has varying levels of experience and familiarity with the issues. These can impact their performance and how voters perceive them."
Holmes On Homes -- the contractors
Not library related, but definately a reference source.
Since I own a home in the area Mike Holmes works in (Oakville, Mississauga, Toronto Ontario) this show scares me to death. I have been keeping a list of contractors he uses and was thrilled to see this page added to his web site.
If you are not aware of the show, Mike Holmes fixes the messes made by other contractors. Scary messes, terrifying messes, unsafe and stupid messes.

Patent sanity is pending - Los Angeles Times
Patent sanity is pending - Los Angeles Times: "Patent sanity is pending
PATENT LAWS MAY BE AN inventor's best friend, giving someone with a groundbreaking idea the means to capitalize on it. But on many levels, the U.S. patent system is profoundly flawed. Too many patents are issued for 'innovations' that are obvious, vague or already in wide use. Too many patent holders try to extend their claims to devices and services that weren't even contemplated when the patents were granted. And it's a difficult, costly exercise to overturn a questionable patent after it has been awarded."

Nascent -- the newest addition to my BlogRoll
It has been going for a month:
Kicking off
Welcome to Nascent, a blog from Nature Publishing Group's Web Publishing team.
Our mission is to apply web technologies in new ways that promote the discovery and dissemination of scientific knowledge. Along with colleagues from other parts of Nature (some of whom will also be blogging here from time to time), we are the people who brought you Connotea and the Nature Podcast. We also work on several scientific database-oriented services such as the Signaling Gateway and the Cell Migration Gateway.
But those are just the beginning, and we will be writing here about further projects as they progress. We will also be commenting on various other things at the interface between web technology and science that happen to capture our interest.
As each member of the team makes his or her first post, we will try to introduce ourselves, so let me kick off. I'm Timo Hannay and I manage Nature's Web Publishing department. I'm a neurophysiologist by training, and now a web geek and publisher by profession. I'm currently based in London and have previously worked in Japan and the US. I'm into the films of Hayao Miyazaki and the music of Shiina Ringo. You can find out more about me from this list of links in Connotea.
We look forward to sharing our thoughts, and hearing back from you, either in comments left on this blog or by email (to nascent at nature.com). Let the fun begin...

Desk Set
The title referred to the staff of the Research and Reference Department of a major television network. Miss Booth (and later, Miss Hepburn) starred as head librarian, Bunny Watson, who suddenly finds her happy existence threatened by the computer age.
While the storyline itself was fictional, everyone in 1950s broadcasting knew that the character of Bunny Watson was based on Agnes Law. Beginning in the early 1950s, Dorothy recalled, a young man from Philadelphia kept coming to the library, asking to use our research facilities. Agnes allowed him to come in and was later a little surprised to learn that it was our staff and Agnes herself that he was researching. The young man turned out to be William Marchant, author of The Desk Set. When Agnes found out, she was thrilled.

Marketing Corporate Libraries
How to Market
A challenge for any corporate librarian is keeping the library's customers aware of all the services the library offers. A successful librarian needs to continuously market library services and competencies. For many people, librarians included, "selling" their services or competencies is not a comfortable idea. However, if corporate librarians do not blow their own horns, library services may only be appreciated by a few. Marketing is often defined as promotion, but in fact promotion is only one of many management techniques that are included under the blanket term of marketing. Marketing includes "determining market niches, defining products and services, setting prices, promoting services, and building good public relations. (Olson & Moseman) A savvy librarian, realizing that marketing library services is the same as providing good customer service, will create and follow a marketing plan to avoid some common library marketing pitfalls.

New Storage System May Make All DVDs Obsolete
New Storage System May Make All DVDs Obsolete
Threatening to make both competing high-definition DVD systems, Blu-Ray and HD DVD, quickly obsolete, a holographic storage system that can store up to 300GB on a single disc is expected to hit the market by this time next year, Britain's New Scientist magazine is reporting in its current issue. The magazine noted that the technology behind it could eventually be developed to store up to 1.6 terabytes on a disk, the equivalent of 300 DVDs. Moreover, it noted, the system employs a laser light unit that allows information to be transferred in a single flash, thereby lowering production costs. The system is being developed jointly by InPhase Technologies and Hitachi

Meetings this week
Two meetings this week:
Monday - CFUW Oakville - The speaker was Lisa Rochon, architecture columnist/critic for The Globe and Mail. Her national column 'Cityspace' explores the complex fabric of the Canadian city - its public spaces, its trophy buildings and its contextual architecture. She travels regularly for her column in Canada and abroad and has written extensively about the redevelopment of the World Trade Center in New York. She has recently released a book "Up North". She spoke on the Canadian-ness of our architecture.
Wednesday - SLA Toronto Chapter West Programming - The speaker was Helen Katz, Manager, Research and Information Services, Ontario Ministry of Finance. Helen spoke on "Business Research for the Non-Business Librarian". Being a chemistry librarian I learned about a number of sources I had not considered before. The turnout for the meeting was good -- quite a few people we had not met before.
Canadian Book Exchange Centre
Canadian Book Exchange Centre: "The Canadian Book Exchange Centre (CBEC) helps Canadian libraries help each other. A resource-sharing service provided by Library and Archives Canada, CBEC is a redistribution centre, a clearing house that arranges for the exchange of publications deemed surplus by one library but needed by another. The Centre ensures that the nation's collective surplus holdings are accessible to all, keeps material in circulation and provides an efficient, practical method of using libraries' excess materials to help fill each other's collection requirements. Currently, the publications made available by the Centre are free of charge, but participating libraries must pay shipping charges whether they send or receive materials."

Searching for Grey Literature
UBC Library: Subject Page - Searching for Grey Literature: "Subject Resources for Searching for Grey Literature
Grey literature is defined as ... 'information produced on all levels of government, academia, business and industry in electronic and print formats not controlled by commercial publishing' ie. where publishing is not the primary activity of the producing body.' (ICGL Luxembourg definition, 1997 - Expanded in New York, 2004)
Grey (or gray) literature has historically been difficult to identify and obtain. There are two reasons for this problem: 1) much of the grey literature is unindexed or unpublished (often both); and 2) it is often locked deep within the 'hidden or invisible' web, and unsearchable. However, as grey literature becomes easier to find in the emerging era of open access, its importance is likely to increase. This guide is meant to provide some assistance to those in scholarly environments wishing to extend their research to this important literature.
Start your search for grey literature by browsing relevant government or institutional websites directly. Increasingly, institutional repositories (IRs) - such as the University of Toronto TSpace - place faculty publications freely-accessible online. Much of this material is indexed by Google Scholar and Scirus. For systematic reviews of the literature, several search engines that crawl different portions of the Web should be searched as 'one-stop searching' does not (yet) exist. "

Today @ PC World - Send Yourself an E-mail in 20 Years: "Send Yourself an E-mail in 20 Years
The most entertaining artifact at my 20-year high school reunion was the unearthed time capsule containing dozens of paper scraps decorated with the scrawls of teenagers finally freed from the confines of classrooms, and facing adulthood for the first time. How about sending yourself an e-mail that you won't receive for 20 years? That's the idea behind Forbes Magazine and Yahoo's e-mail time capsule.
You have until November 30 to compose an e-mail snapshot of your life. You can choose to receive it next year, if you wish. But I'm opting for the 20-year return--just in time for my 40-year high school reunion. To read the story behind the project, click here.

In Flanders Fields
In Flanders Fields
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Google's mission is to organize the world's information, but much of that information isn't yet online. Google Print aims to get it there by putting book content where you can find it most easily right in your Google search results.
How does Google Print work?
Just do a search on the Google Print homepage. When we find a book whose content contains a match for your search terms, we'll link to it in your search results. Click a book title and you'll see the page of the book that has your search terms, along with other information about the book and 'Buy this Book' links to online bookstores (you can view the entirety of public domain books or, for books under copyright, just a few pages or in some cases, only the titles bibliographic data and brief snippets). You can also search for more information within that specific book and find nearby libraries that have it. "

This guide is designed to serve libraries automating their local serial holdings, particularly those implementing the MARC21 Format for Holdings Data (MFHD). It also aims to help anyone who needs to understand the format. The Guide focuses on the functions of MARC coding in general serials control and display of information. Users may look at a range of options and alternatives provided in the Format, rather than single solutions. The hope is to design a guide that is easy to use. It may be useful to consult, as a reference, a more abbreviated Handbook to the most common fields, available at http://www.lib.unc.edu/cat/mfh.
The Guide is divided into parts:

The EnerGuide for Houses Service and Grants
The EnerGuide for Houses Service and Grants: "What Is EnerGuide for Houses?
EnerGuide for Houses was created by the Government of Canada to help homeowners get independent, expert advice about the energy efficiency of their homes. Developed by the Office of Energy Efficiency of Natural Resources Canada in cooperation with Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, the program aims to develop a pool of qualified energy experts to help Canadians improve the energy efficiency of their houses. By reducing the energy used in our homes, we support Canada's goal of reducing the production of greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change.
The EnerGuide for Houses evaluation service provides homeowners with information on energy-efficient improvements for their homes. Many service organizations across Canada offer this service. They can provide independent expert advice on the different systems of your home and what can be done to improve comfort and reduce energy bills. By assessing your home, an EnerGuide for Houses advisor can analyse how it uses energy and where energy is being wasted. "
We had this done and mostly heard what we already knew, but we now qualify for discounts on some improvements. We are waiting for the final report in the mail.

Click on the chapters and download the pdf of the chapter.
From Grokster to Google, copyright has emerged as one of the Internet's most challenging legal issues. Once limited to a select group of scholars, copyright now captures front page headlines as millions of Canadians consider its impact on education, technology, communication, and culture.
As Canada embarks on a new round of digital copyright reform, this collection of 19 essays from Canada's leading copyright experts provides context and analysis of the latest reform proposals. Edited by Professor Michael Geist, an internationally-regarded authority on Internet and technology law, the collection reviews international copyright norms, assesses dozens of specific Bill C-60 provisions, and identifies potential future copyright reform initiatives. Completed immediately after the introduction of Bill C-60, this timely volume provides policy makers, lawyers, judges, educators, and interested Canadians with the tools and knowledge they need to participate in a copyright debate that will shape the future of the Internet, culture, and education in Canada. Digital Home Canada - Digital Home Power Saving Tips
Digital Home Canada - Digital Home Power Saving Tips: "Computers and consumer electronics represent the fastest-growing use of electricity in North American homes today.
According to the US Environmental Protection agency, the average North American home has roughly 2 TVs, a VCR, a DVD player and 3 telephones. If these items were replaced by more efficient Energy Star models, it would save over 22 billion pounds of greenhouse gas emissions - the equivalent of taking over 1.6 million cars off the road.
Digital Home Canada looks at how you can save money, help the environment and learn more about two Canadian energy saving programs - Energuide and Energy Star. "

How to Save the World
How to Save the World: "The Psychology of Information, or Why We Don't Share Stuff"
Of all the blogs, articles, etc. I read, this one is by far the most thought provoking, relevant, and interesting.
Dave Pollard from his bio page "I'm a 52 year old idealist and writer who recently abandoned my well-paying job as Chief Knowledge Officer of a Big 4 accountancy because I couldn't live any longer being part of our society's problem instead of part of the solution. Before that I spent most of my career as an advisor to entrepreneurs. I write a weblog called How to Save the World and I'm in the process of writing three books:
The Cost of Not Knowing, a book on the failures and future of Knowledge Management,
Natural Enterprise, a do-it-yourself handbook about establishing your own satisfying, socially and environmentally responsible business in collaboration with people you really care about, and
The Only Life We Know, a visionary novel about the strange, diverse and surprisingly idyllic life on Earth after a future eco-collapse.
I recently established my own consultancy, called Meeting of Minds, to coach entrepreneurs how to create and operate their own businesses while avoiding the landmines that cause so many entrepreneurs to fail."

Saskatoon StarPhoenix - -- Power to the people: Bloggers wield media punch
Saskatoon StarPhoenix - canada.com network: Darlene Fichter, a data librarian at the University of Saskatchewan and an expert on blogging, says the relationship between bloggers and mainstream media is fast becoming a more complicated one: "At first, mainstream media tended to discount blogs. On the other side, some bloggers have taken the idea that they're the new journalists. Somewhere in between those the truth lies. In 2005, we're asking what is a journalist? We wouldn't have asked that just a few short years ago."

Widespread implementation would, among other benefits, do away with the need for newsprint, ink, presses, mailroom equipment and distribution costs more than half of a publisher-s operating expenses. Standard Checklist Criteria For Business Recovery
FEMA: Purpose of Standard Checklist Criteria For Business Recovery: "Standard Checklist Criteria For Business Recovery
The intent of this 'Checklist' is to provide a means of creating a 'Business Recovery' manual for your business. The manual would be used by you in the event that you had to execute a recovery of you business due to a natural or man-made disaster. This 'Checklist' can be used by manufactures, corporate offices, retailers, utilities or any organization where a sizeable number of people work or gather.
Whether you operate from a high-rise building or an industrial complex; whether you own, rent or lease your property; whether you are a large or small company; the contents of this checklist will apply.
To begin, you neednt have in-depth knowledge of emergency management. What you need is the authority to create a plan and a commitment from the chief executive officer or principal(s) of your company to make emergency management part of you company culture.
If you already have a plan, use this 'Checklist' as a resource to apply business controls to the plan, if needed, or to assess the overall readiness and maintenance of your plan documentation."

Segway | Concept Centaur
Segway | Concept Centaur: "
Like the mythical half-horse, half-man of Greek lore, Concept Centaur combines the best of several technologies to create an innovative whole. The result of exploration by Segway LLC's product development team, Concept Centaur will challenge the way you think about four-wheeled transportation.
From time to time Segway's product development team devotes days, or even weeks, to creating new product concepts with the goal of finding a prince among frogs. It's a product exploration process they call 'frog kissing.' During this time, engineers and designers are encouraged to use any available materials in a very short time frame to prove a concept will work.
Recently, the product development team demonstrated that Concept Centaur was a princea concept that passed this initial feasibility test, but is not yet ready to become a product. Concept Centaur demonstrates Segway's continued commitment to breakthrough innovation and the innumerable possibilities for the future of personal transportation. "

SPECIAL LIBRARIES MANAGEMENT HANDBOOK: THE BASICS
SPECIAL LIBRARIES MANAGEMENT HANDBOOK: THE BASICS: "SPECIAL LIBRARIES MANAGEMENT HANDBOOK:
THE BASICS
These 'chapters' were written by students in CLIS 724 (Special Libraries and Information Centers) at the University of South Carolina College of Library and Information Science over the period 1999-2004.. Their assignment was to produce a chapter in a class-produced practical handbook on the management of special libraries and information centers. These chapters are written from the perspective of the beginning special librarian and are intended to provide basic 'how-to' instructions on dealing with the issue or problem addressed. Additional chapters will be produced by students in other classes and will be posted here.
These chapters are the intellectual property of the authors. The authors have granted permission for copying and downloading for individual and professional use by special librarians. However, any additional use of these materials in any published form (including re-publication on the Web) must be by permission of the authors. Most of the authors have included an e-mail address for contact purposes but if that does not work then you may contact me, Robert V. Williams, Professor at: bobwill@sc.edu and I will be in touch with the authors. "

Internet Scout NSDL Report for Math, Engineering, and Technology is no more :( -- Confessions of a Science Librarian
Confessions of a Science Librarian: "Internet Scout Project Says Goodbye to NSDL Scout Reports
Dear Reader,
With this edition, the Internet Scout Project ends the NSDL Report for Math, Engineering, and Technology after four years of publication. We are very excited about our newest NSF National Science Digital Library-funded effort, the Applied Mathematics and Science Education Repository (AMSER), a new four-year project that will link community and technical colleges to online applied math and science resources via a web portal and complimentary services. Our goal is to make AMSER-- http://amser.org/ -- the same kind of high-quality source of information about online resources that the NSDL Scout Reports have been."
From John Dupius' blog. I read that report just this morning and did not read this part. I checked the amser.org site and they do not have any rss feeds for anything let alone new resources. I send them an email asking if they were considering such a thing.
thanks John for bringing this to my attention

"Come to booth ### to see what is new with #######!"
"Please register online by Thursday June 2nd"
OK, I know the mail can be slow between the US of A and Canada, but really!
I also received today the May 2005 SciTech News telling me all about the conference sessions available from the divisions.

SiliconValleyWatcher.com: A tribute to one of Silicon Valley's most influential and forgotten researchers at Xerox Parc event
SiliconValleyWatcher.com: A tribute to one of Silicon Valley's most influential and forgotten researchers at Xerox Parc event: "The place to be Wednesday evening was at Xerox PARC, for a reunion of the seminal Homebrew Computer Club and a tribute to a man that history has tried to forget, or at least relegate to a minor role: Doug Engelbart.
Mr Engelbart is usually remembered simply as the inventor of the computer mouse. But dozens of computer pioneers stood up Wednesday to acknowledge his much larger role, as one of the most profound and influential thinkers of their time. "

Interesting things learned at exhibits and interesting booths visited:
Interesting things learned at exhibits and interesting booths visited (in no order whatsoever):
CISTI – http://www.cisti-icist.nrc-cnrc.gc.ca/
CISTI is in the process of creating (with Sirsi) a Competitive Technical Intelligence Portal
The best for sci-tech document delivery!!!
Knovel – http://www.knovel.com/
They take the reference books, and then make the data in them accessible and usable online with interactive charts and tables and graphs.
Dialog – http://www.dialog.com/
P DialogLink 5 has some new features I was unaware of as I have not used DialogLink since it was in version 2 J The one feature which really caught my attention was the customized reporting. (and it is free)
P Chemical structure searching on Dialog – DialogLink has some interesting structure searching features. We use SciFinder, so this is just me keeping an eye on the market
Engineering Village 2 – http://www.engineeringvillage2.org/
Since some of our research is heading back towards physics and away from pure chemistry, I was looking for something to supplement our existing resources. This deserves a look (and a trial)
Minesoft – http://www.minesoft.com/
I had never heard of this company before, but they have interesting offerings and are competing against Delphion.
UMI Proquest – http://www.umi.com/
They had a new digital scanner they were demonstrating. Since much of our archival journal material is on microfilm, I keep a file for scanners in case ours dies.
Ip.com – http://www.ip.com/
We are already a client but it was nice to see them there.
Special issues – http://www.specialissues.com/
They track and find industrial and trade magazine special issues not generally available in the big commercial databases.
British Library – http://www.bl.uk/
A digital page turning demo. The page turning of antiquarian books was done by actually filming the curator turning the pages. The pages turn differently each time. You just drag your finger on the screen. Very cool.
Global Securities Information – http://www.gsionline.com/
Not my usual information need, but they showed me their stuff and let me look into some companies I was interested in. Thanks
Paterra – http://www.paterra.com/
Translations of Japanese patents quickly and online. Worth further investigation.
Serials Solutions – http://www.serialssolution.com/
They should have had a bigger booth. As a solo librarian I don't have time to track down each change of an online title's url nor do I want to worry about ordering documents in journals we have access to through Factiva or Proquest. Serials Solution tracks this for me and it is reasonably priced for my size of collection.
Vivisimo – http://www.vivisimo.com/
Somehow I missed this booth. Must have been when the ice cream arrived J I had intended to visit and see their product in action.
Powell's – http://www.powells.com/My favourite used bookstore. Did not have time to visit when I was last in Portland but will make time on my next trip.

A house made entirely of books
Livio De Marchi: "Can you imagine a house made out of books? A house in which even the table, the chairs and the bed seem to have been made of pages to turn and bound covers? You might say that this is a dream turned into reality by Livio De Marchi! "
WatchThatPage - Monitor web pages extract new information
WatchThatPage - Monitor web pages extract new information: "Monitor pages, extract new information
WatchThatPage is a service that enables you to automatically collect new information from your favorite pages on the Internet. You select which pages to monitor, and WatchThatPage will find which pages have changed, and collect all the new content for you. The new information is presented to you in an email and/or a personal web page. You can specify when the changes will be collected, so they are fresh when you want to read them. The service is free!"

What Do Your Customers Really, Really Want?
What Do Your Customers Really, Really Want?: "What Do Your Customers Really, Really Want?
by Sherri Dorfman
June 7, 2005
Most businesses these days are under pressure to differentiate their products and services to attract new business. Although customers can play an important role in helping companies define their differentiation, a surprising number of businesses decide to skip this important customer research and launch offerings based on what 'we think our customers want.' Contributed papers session
Contributed papers session
I hope they put these online like the Nashville committee did. The papers I saw were very interesting but not well attended. (I have the handouts if anyone cannot get a copy from another source)
Mueller, Britt "Information seeking behavior of engineers in the corporate environment: implications for information delivery" (Qualcomm, San Diego, Calif.)
Olszewski, Larry and Lynn S. Connaway "What in the world: leveraging corporate assets for internal and external use" (OCLC, Dublin, Ohio)
Augustyniak, Rebecca "The Information professional's role in creating business management systems" (Center for Information, Training, and Evaluation Services, Florida State University, Tallahassee)
Makani, Joyline "It's the attention economy: librarians pay attention" (Dalhousie University, Halifax, NS)

The amount and variety of give-aways this year is astonishing. The kids (big and small) are amazed. My favourite so far is the pop-up book light, however I did win a USB memory stick from the British Library in a draw. I still hope for one of the many many iPods.
note added later: seems that this is called swag (or schwag). This is a term I had never heard before, but my mother knew what it meant!

Gary Price - the newest and the best from the one who knows
Tuesday, Jun 07, 2005
1:30 PM - 3:00 PM
Location: Toronto Convention Ctr
Gary will be presenting another fast-paced tour of the Web. Come learn about the latest resources and techniques on the ever expanding web. He is sure to include specialized databases and web sources you have not seen and more ways to locate the information you need.
I went. The room was plenty big enough. Some people were on the floor at the back but only because they did not want to pass infront of a lot of people to get to a seat in the middle of a row.
They said they had 300 handouts. They were gone early.
But the room was big and cool.
The presentation is all online at
http://www.freepint.com/gary/2005/newsdivision2005.html
or

or

so I left and went to the contributed papers session down the hall.

Marketing Intangibles and Tangibles: Selling Information Services/ Luncheon
Marketing Intangibles and Tangibles: Selling Information Services/ Luncheon
Tuesday, Jun 07, 2005
11:30 AM - 1:00 PM
An analyst from Outsell Inc. will present the company’s advice on creating the message and delivery format for selling the value of information services to potential clients. Niche marketing principles are important here.
Mary Corcoran from outsell presented this topic after a nice, if crowded, lunch of chicken, rice, and vegetables.
Need to move our products from intangible to tangible
1.5% of time spend on marketing (for a solo = 15 min/week)
See www.outsellinc.com for info on Marketing 101 and Marketing 301. Many of her slides are from these programmes.
Some points I wrote down:
each product needs a product manager to promote and drive the product
a portal on te intranet is either a partner or a competitor
must have all products, presentations, etc. consistant across the function
know who you are – strategic assessmenet
know your customers or taret market – segment the market and understand needs
move from idea of what the library is to how it will help users
only 30% of any population is a library user
target the non-users and find out what they need from te li rary
ask people where they are currently getting their information
ask them how long it takes them
ask them what their biggest issues are
there is a trend back to intermediaries for searching (I have personally noticed this in my work at Xerox)
calculate cost per user. Try to reduce it by getting more users
satisfaction with a product is not loyalty
ask if they would recommend it to others
read book "selling the invisible"

Tuesday Keynote - Bill Buxton
Traffic was not as bad as I thougt it would be getting in from the 'burbs to downtown Toronto (I never do this at rush hour) so I actually made it to Bill Buxton's keynote talk. Very interesting to listen to, but hard to explain to someone who was not there. Perhaps I had not had enough coffee. A few key and interesting points I did retain:
He is a student of the work of Kranzberg
We all need to understand the larger impact of introducing new technology
Good ideas are everywhere, implementing them takes as much or more creativity and hard work
By definition information informs
Recommends the "Historical Atlas of Canada" as a present for a parent, then you can inherit it later
Need to move information and technology to a human centric perspective

Six Sigma
Presenter Jean-Marie Cote
He is a Master Black Belt working for PACCAR
Six Sigma – A strategic tool
Historical background
Developed at Motorola (1987)
.
.
.
GE (1985) – turning point
.
.
.
They have not all been successful. Implementation is the issue, not the programme.
Has many names:
Six Sigma – driving business excellence
Operations excellence
Lean manufacturing
Lean operations
Lean six sigma
TPS
High impact Kaisen
1. close understanding of customer needs and wants
2. design led use of facts, data and statistical analysis
3. diligent approach to problem solving
Six Sigma takes time. It is not a quick fix.
Definition
- statistical measure of performance
- rigorous analytic appr4oaqc for
o process variation reduction
o complex prpblem solving
o waste reduction
- a philosophy that higher quality results in
o increased efficiency
o business excellence
o enhanced customer satisfaction
It is NOT
- just statistics
- a rigid mechanical approach – it can be flexigle and can be adjusted
- not a panacea – not suited for all situations
- magic
need all the rigt people and must be top down (ie supported by all levels of management)
driving excellence
define – measure – analyze – improve/design – control/validate
project selection is key
- in line with business strategy
- target customers
- add value
MUST BE VERY WELL DEFINED
Baseline must be understood
Must be able to measure
Definable goals
Timeline
Reasonable boundaries
As project progresses you refine and redefine project]map the process and identify non value added activities (NVA)
Take time to accurately define the defect
Soft tools
Process map (IPO)
Cause and effect matrix (QFD)
- what and how
- what customer wants and how delivered
Cause and effect diagrams (Fishbone)
- what we think is driving the issue
Waste elimination
- value stream map
- process flow
- spaghetti diagram
Pareto and time charts
Input and output characteristics
Input and output characteristics must be characterized and weighted in relation to goal
Critical characteristics must be measures
# of characteristics must be manageable
Focus on the process not the people until y ou know the process is robust. After that training can be addressed.
Low hanging fruit
Non value added steops – get rid of them
All steps need to add value
There are some necessary NVA – legal, EH&S, etc.
Analyze phase
Use information to create knowledge
Draw conclusions
Objectives
find root cause not symptoms
propose options
options mean change. Change means impact on someone. Change may involve investment.
Up to this point you have control and responsibility. After this point someone else may be responsible.
Challenges
Foresee impact of changes
COMMUNICATE
Loop back regularly to revise process
