Since I own a home in the area Mike Holmes works in (Oakville, Mississauga, Toronto Ontario) this show scares me to death. I have been keeping a list of contractors he uses and was thrilled to see this page added to his web site.



If you are not aware of the show, Mike Holmes fixes the messes made by other contractors. Scary messes, terrifying messes, unsafe and stupid messes.

Well wadda ya know -- Canadian Intellectual Property Office will send speakers

The Bank of Speakers initiative was launched on April 26, 2004, as part of World Intellectual Property Day. It is a collaborative effort of the Canadian Intellectual Property Office and the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada, the association of professionals concerned with patents, trade-marks, copyrights and industrial designs.

Both organizations have joined forces to work on cross-marketing endeavours and to deliver educational IP presentations.

Welcome to Nascent, a blog from Nature Publishing Group's Web Publishing team.



Our mission is to apply web technologies in new ways that promote the discovery and dissemination of scientific knowledge. Along with colleagues from other parts of Nature (some of whom will also be blogging here from time to time), we are the people who brought you Connotea and the Nature Podcast. We also work on several scientific database-oriented services such as the Signaling Gateway and the Cell Migration Gateway.



But those are just the beginning, and we will be writing here about further projects as they progress. We will also be commenting on various other things at the interface between web technology and science that happen to capture our interest.



As each member of the team makes his or her first post, we will try to introduce ourselves, so let me kick off. I'm Timo Hannay and I manage Nature's Web Publishing department. I'm a neurophysiologist by training, and now a web geek and publisher by profession. I'm currently based in London and have previously worked in Japan and the US. I'm into the films of Hayao Miyazaki and the music of Shiina Ringo. You can find out more about me from this list of links in Connotea.

Desk Set

The title referred to the staff of the Research and Reference Department of a major television network. Miss Booth (and later, Miss Hepburn) starred as head librarian, Bunny Watson, who suddenly finds her happy existence threatened by the computer age.



While the storyline itself was fictional, everyone in 1950s broadcasting knew that the character of Bunny Watson was based on Agnes Law. Beginning in the early 1950s, Dorothy recalled, a young man from Philadelphia kept coming to the library, asking to use our research facilities. Agnes allowed him to come in and was later a little surprised to learn that it was our staff and Agnes herself that he was researching. The young man turned out to be William Marchant, author of The Desk Set. When Agnes found out, she was thrilled.

How to Market

A challenge for any corporate librarian is keeping the library's customers aware of all the services the library offers. A successful librarian needs to continuously market library services and competencies. For many people, librarians included, "selling" their services or competencies is not a comfortable idea. However, if corporate librarians do not blow their own horns, library services may only be appreciated by a few. Marketing is often defined as promotion, but in fact promotion is only one of many management techniques that are included under the blanket term of marketing. Marketing includes "determining market niches, defining products and services, setting prices, promoting services, and building good public relations. (Olson & Moseman) A savvy librarian, realizing that marketing library services is the same as providing good customer service, will create and follow a marketing plan to avoid some common library marketing pitfalls.

Threatening to make both competing high-definition DVD systems, Blu-Ray and HD DVD, quickly obsolete, a holographic storage system that can store up to 300GB on a single disc is expected to hit the market by this time next year, Britain's New Scientist magazine is reporting in its current issue. The magazine noted that the technology behind it could eventually be developed to store up to 1.6 terabytes on a disk, the equivalent of 300 DVDs. Moreover, it noted, the system employs a laser light unit that allows information to be transferred in a single flash, thereby lowering production costs. The system is being developed jointly by InPhase Technologies and Hitachi

Two meetings this week:

Monday - CFUW Oakville - The speaker was Lisa Rochon, architecture columnist/critic for The Globe and Mail. Her national column 'Cityspace' explores the complex fabric of the Canadian city - its public spaces, its trophy buildings and its contextual architecture. She travels regularly for her column in Canada and abroad and has written extensively about the redevelopment of the World Trade Center in New York. She has recently released a book "Up North". She spoke on the Canadian-ness of our architecture.

Wednesday - SLA Toronto Chapter West Programming - The speaker was Helen Katz, Manager, Research and Information Services, Ontario Ministry of Finance. Helen spoke on "Business Research for the Non-Business Librarian". Being a chemistry librarian I learned about a number of sources I had not considered before. The turnout for the meeting was good -- quite a few people we had not met before.

Grey (or gray) literature has historically been difficult to identify and obtain. There are two reasons for this problem: 1) much of the grey literature is unindexed or unpublished (often both); and 2) it is often locked deep within the 'hidden or invisible' web, and unsearchable. However, as grey literature becomes easier to find in the emerging era of open access, its importance is likely to increase. This guide is meant to provide some assistance to those in scholarly environments wishing to extend their research to this important literature.

Iowa-Born Journalist Hugh Sidey Dies: "Iowa-Born Journalist Hugh Sidey Dies



DES MOINES -- Native Iowan High Sidey died of a heart attack in Paris.

Sidey was born in Greenfield, Iowa, in 1927 and grew up working on his father's weekly newspaper. After serving in World War II, Sidey obtained a journalism degree from Iowa State College, and worked for newspapers in Omaha, Neb., and Council Bluffs.

He then joined Time Magazine, where he wrote a column titled 'The Presidency' that ran for the past four decades. The columns, which were personal portraits of U.S. presidents, ended in 1996. Sidey was known for having unusual access to presidents, beginning with President John F. Kennedy, whom he interviewed during a White House swim. Sidey also served as Time's White House correspondent and its Washington Bureau Chief. He also wrote or contributed to seven books.

Hugh Sidey was 78 years old. "

I found Dr. Carol Tenopir's site today and found it full of information. Papers and survey's you can read online.





Carol Tenopir is a professor at the School of Information Sciences at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and the Interim Director of the Center for Information Studies. Her areas of teaching and research include: information access and retrieval, electronic publishing, the information industry, online resources, and the impact of technology on reference librarians and scientists. She is the author of five books, including, Communication Patterns of Engineers, (IEEE/Wiley InterScience, 2004) with Donald W. King.



Dr. Tenopir has published over 200 journal articles, is a frequent speaker at professional conferences, and since 1983 has written the "Online Databases" column for Library Journal. She is the recipient of the 1993 Outstanding Information Science Teacher Award from the American Society for Information Science/Institute for Scientific Information and the 2000 ALISE Award for Teaching Excellence. She also received the 2002 American Society for Information Science & Technology, Research Award and the 2004 International Information Industry Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. Tenopir holds a PhD degree in Library and Information Science from the University of Illinois.

In mid-June, an expert Task Force, appointed by the National Research Council Canada (NRC),

came together in Ottawa to plan a national Forum as the focus of the National Consultation on

Access to Scientific Research Data (NCASRD). The Forum brought together more than seventy

leaders Canada-wide in research, data management, administration, intellectual property and other

important areas.

This Report is a comprehensive review of the issues, opportunities and challenges identified at the

Forum, complemented by a selection of the supporting documents presented as Appendices.

This national telephone survey was carried out between January 5 and January 31, 2005, and was based on a random sample of 1,963 Canadians 16 years of age and older, including an oversample of respondents from minority official-language communities.



The primary purpose of the survey was to provide a detailed statistical picture of the habits of Canadians with respect to buying and reading books for pleasure, as well as to update the findings of Reading in Canada 1991, undertaken by Ekos on behalf of Canadian Heritage.

The amount and variety of give-aways this year is astonishing. The kids (big and small) are amazed. My favourite so far is the pop-up book light, however I did win a USB memory stick from the British Library in a draw. I still hope for one of the many many iPods.

note added later: seems that this is called swag (or schwag). This is a term I had never heard before, but my mother knew what it meant!

They said they had 300 handouts. They were gone early.

An analyst from Outsell Inc. will present the company’s advice on creating the message and delivery format for selling the value of information services to potential clients. Niche marketing principles are important here.


Mary Corcoran from outsell presented this topic after a nice, if crowded, lunch of chicken, rice, and vegetables.

Need to move our products from intangible to tangible
1.5% of time spend on marketing (for a solo = 15 min/week)

Some points I wrote down:
 each product needs a product manager to promote and drive the product
 a portal on te intranet is either a partner or a competitor
 must have all products, presentations, etc. consistant across the function
 know who you are – strategic assessmenet
 know your customers or taret market – segment the market and understand needs
 move from idea of what the library is to how it will help users
 only 30% of any population is a library user
 target the non-users and find out what they need from te li rary
 ask people where they are currently getting their information
 ask them how long it takes them
 ask them what their biggest issues are
 there is a trend back to intermediaries for searching (I have personally noticed this in my work at Xerox)
 calculate cost per user. Try to reduce it by getting more users
 satisfaction with a product is not loyalty
 ask if they would recommend it to others

Traffic was not as bad as I thougt it would be getting in from the 'burbs to downtown Toronto (I never do this at rush hour) so I actually made it to Bill Buxton's keynote talk. Very interesting to listen to, but hard to explain to someone who was not there. Perhaps I had not had enough coffee. A few key and interesting points I did retain:
 He is a student of the work of Kranzberg
 We all need to understand the larger impact of introducing new technology
 Good ideas are everywhere, implementing them takes as much or more creativity and hard work
 By definition information informs
 Recommends the "Historical Atlas of Canada" as a present for a parent, then you can inherit it later
 Need to move information and technology to a human centric perspective
